19/7/2007 De Wraak Van Draak (2007)
Wraak Van Draak (translated Revenge of Draco) was never meant for an English audience, but that is what we were, and we had no subtitles. Thankfully for us the film told its story visually. At 2hrs and 47mins long it is exceedingly long for an independent film, and in parts it sags, but they have done well with what they had available. It turns out now that there are two versions of the film the second is 20mins shorter, and according to the filmmakers, cuts out the daft running sequences we grew to hate quickly.

The story begins in 1527 as Draco gatecrashes the King’s banquet to steal a skull. In the future Draco returns to recover his skull from a group of teenagers camping in a forest. The film has car chases, guns, lots of action, and is very exciting to behold. The characters are strong if not a little clichéd with their own obvious character traits. There is the Brad Pitt leader type, the tough guy, the army man, the guy with fashion sense.
Add into the mix some strange hunters, bank robbers, thieves and you have a good movie. One problem with the film is the costumes for 1527; all too often there are shots of trainers underneath medieval garb, which all but ruins the effect. Other items like electric lights and switches do not help, but are more forgettable. Overall the film is tight and well directed with some good camerawork to portray the scene. The music perfectly suits the action and the soundtrack is generally top class. There little blips in quality occasionally, like sword wounds that don’t touch people, but these are easily ignored when engrossed in the spectacle. Another problem is the slow pacing: the road trip towards the beginning seems to go on for a life time and does not really build the characters, nor does the excess running around the forest. Wraak Van Draak is a steady piece of work and I would have believed you if you said it cost 100,000 to make but instead it cost the makers just 10,000 euros. This is incredible as they deal out their action and this may be the best independent film I have ever seen. Well done, Buying and Simons!
