Miami Vice (2006)

I wanted to like this film. I loved Michael Mann's previous film Collateral but this film is not as impressive. I was very disappointed with this film of the 1980's tv show. I must say I have never seen the tv show. This film however has far too little action init for an action film, this is coupled by too much dialogue. There is also too little of a verbal relationship between the two main characters. Its like they have a psychic link to eachother however it distances the audience from them as we don't know what they are up to. What works about cop films is the witty dialogue between the characters. This film is a little too gritty and serious and thus is loses some entertainment. In the last 20mins it started to come together and work but that was only because there were a lot of shots fired. I wanted to enjoy this film but I just couldn't I think that Colin Farrell is on form here, I generally don't like him but he suits this role. Jamie Foxx is the opposite, I like him usually and in this film I dislike him. He doesn't seem to fit the role too well and he doesn't look bulky enough.
I reckon this could well be like marmite, you either love it or you hate it and unfortunately I am leaning to the second camp. I think you can come out of this film having enjoyed it but it seems too thinly spread. The plot is not complex enough and you can guess early on what will happen in the end. The film is shot in a manner which is common now, its a very Michael Mann style, its also a little Tony Scott. I tend not to like this style and at times it seems a little out of place in this quite slow film. But the film is still shot quite nicely, its just a shame about the style in which is it shot. I don't know watch this film and make your own mind up, I don't think its for me. I am giving it 50 because of the love it or hate it nature. I think for one of the first times I may have agreed with what other reviewers have said. All in all though I think I've been fair to it, sorry Michael. Review by Jonathan Little
