25/7/2006 Just Like Heaven (2005)
Hmm where to start with this film. Well it was first introduced to me about a year ago by my lovely webmaster. Since then I have been wanting to see the film due to the trailer impressing me. This is a romcom but it breaks the usual rules, well kind of. Romcoms always follow the same basic plot structure, boy meets girl, boy gets girl, girl leaves boy, boy gets girl back and laughter ensues. It is the same with this film although its not very often that the girl is actually dead or that they start out loathing eachother.
The story is pretty simple, Elizabeth Masterson is a doctor who just wants a promotion and has no time for her social life. She doesn’t care about this she just loves her job and wants to keep doing it. Things go out of her control as she gets hit by a truck however. David Abbott is looking to buy an apartment and he find a perfect one based on its sofa. He starts to get haunted soon after moving in by the spirit of Elizabeth and their relationship starts there.
I must say I don’t think much of the director Mark Waters’ previous projects, well I think they’re ok but not something for men to be directing. I am speaking of Lindsey Lohans Mean girls and Freaky Friday. This I suppose is the same kind of vein in which Just Like Heaven is filmed. The previously name Lohan films are very well made and are entertaining as well and this one follows suit as well. But I thought they’d have been directed by lasses is all.
Anyway the snapping up of Reese Witherspoon in this film is brilliant, she suits the role she plays perfectly. I don’t think her acting can be faulted at all and neither can the lead man Mark Ruffalo’s. He plays the normal guy pretty well although I will be honest and say that the first time he talked I thought ‘man this guys voice is going to drive me mad’ but it was ok. This film is funny, you will laugh and enjoy it as I did. There are witty lines and it is enjoyable. One such piece of greatness is in the presence of John Heder of Napolean Dynamite fame. I did not think it was possible to find something else to cast him as, I was wrong, he does the role of paranormal expert perfectly and also geekily which makes it extra worthwhile. This film flopped at the box office and I don’t really know why, it is a very good film and you can probably find it on dvd for £8 else join Screenselect at the bottom of this page. Really I did enjoy this film and I think you will too.
