Superman Returns (2006)
|
I had no good expectations of this film at all when I got to the cinema with my girlfriend to watch it. However, I left feeling that it was a well made superhero film and that I had enjoyed it though probably wouldn’t choose to watch it again. See its good but its just not great. Bryan Singer is like the worlds biggest superman geek, I don’t get why I don’t see the attraction in the character as much as say Spiderman or Batman. He however loves it and didn’t direct X Men3 because he wanted to do that. In all honesty I prefer X3 to this film. It is too long and too little actually happens. Before I got into the cinema I knew if it was going to be good it would be thanks to the brilliant Kevin Spacey and he did shine however right there next to him to counteract his brilliance was Parker Posey who I believe was trying to make it a bad film. I was expecting Brandon Routh to be dreaful as the main man as well and at times he was a little bit wooden but he played the man of steel nicely the same cannot be said of Kate ‘Lois Lane’ Bosworth. Sure she’s pretty but she doesn’t look right in this film, maybe it’s the way they filmed her but its wrong. Also her character is annoying but that’s not her fault. In fact she also does a good job. I don’t know whos fault this is (either director or screenwriter or stunt co-ordinator) but towards the beginning of the film she gets banged around this plane because, well its crashing and she isn’t wearing a seatbelt and she eventually just finds her way to her seat and sits down uninjured and fine even after being flung around like that. Then elsewhere on the plane some guys luggage falls out and hits him on the head and he’s unconscious. Sure with this film you have to suspend your disbelief but honestly?
Another moment of this madness comes from the worlds biggest What the F**k moment ever as a dog decides it wants to be cannibalistic and eats its doggy friend, why is that in the film? It doesn’t have anything to do with the plot nor does it foreshadow something coming along later it is pointless. Why Bryan did you do that shot? Its things like that which spoil this film. This movie is filmed in a very distinctively soft style which my girlfriend correctly pointed out was to make it look a little dated but to me it made it look unrealistic especially on the characters faces. It’s like smearing too much Vaseline on the lens to make Kate Bosworth too cute or something. It is not a style I like much. Lastly problem is that it is far too long, sure the plot flies along quite nicely but how does it take up 150mins of my time? Barely anything happens in the film, I’m not sure where the time goes usually I say that because the plot is thrilling but this time it’s because I don’t remember what fills the spaces. Pirates you can feel the length of the film as there is so much Swash buckling going on throughout. This is the same length, but how?
The story was a good one although why Lex would want to build an island out of grey rock I don’t know. So it is flawed in places and I will never believe the fact that no-one knows its Clark Kent when they have seen him up close he’s only wearing a pair of specs after all. At least other heroes have masks to hide behind. This movie will keep you entertained over the summer and you will most likely enjoy it. Its well made with care and attention you just need to try a little too hard at times to suspend your disbelief. Peace out dudes! Review by Jonathan Little
