Everyone who has mentioned this film to me has told me it was good. Even the oscars awarded it Best Actress in a Supporting Role. But I just don't get the hype, the accents as per usual for a hollywood film are a bit too British. Fine its almost right but I wasn't convinced thoroughly. Also why did Rachel Weisz get best supporting actress she was hardly in it and her character really annoyed me. I cannot get why she was awarded an oscar for a part which anyone could play. She wasn't even sad when she lost her baby for petes sake.
For me this is also a step down for director Fernando Meirelles whos previous effort City of God was superb. It was a brilliant film about gang life in Brazil. I am not sure this film could ever live up to that one. In the trailer it said that this was the most anticipated thriller of the year. I can think of better thrillers last year. So far I have been negative however this film does have good bits otherwise I wouldn't be rating it above average. I have commented on how the direction is not as good as City of God but he set his standards very high with that film and in this one it is still good. Fine the jump cuts get a bit confusing at times but it is good. The handheld style makes the film look realistic. The film is also political and I like that in a film bringing out the faults of the developed worlds testing of drugs in Africa. Ralph Fiennes does a good job in the film as the lead actor and he gives a memorable performance. However the character is odd, he does not do what people in a real world would do and he makes some very odd decisions. It would be very easy for me at this juncture to leave you with many spoilers but hey. This is a gritty and provocative film which I really wanted to enjoy. However, it suffers in the way many British funded films do in that it portrays the subject matter in a slightly subpar way. I guess you'd call in anti-hollywood in the way it is shot but I just think it is daft. Overall a good film. I could be a one off in being the person that doesn't like it that much but if you want to see what Meirelles can do see City of God. Review by Jonathan Little
