7/7/2006 Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Mans Chest (2006)
I was definitely a fan of the original film which was released in 2003. In fact there is a review for it on here giving it 90. This film is also just as good as that film. However, I cannot bring myself to give it 90 solely because it is not the original material. This film has all the magic, all of the high seas adventure that the last one had but it all seems slightly out of focus and confusing. Why is all of this stuff happening? Why is the film so darn anti-climactic. I love this film, it is artistic and brilliant but they just leave so much to be answered in the last film that this is too much of a stepping stone to be immense. The first film was a surprise. The studios expected the film to sink but it didn’t it brought in a bundle and they have every reason to believe this will as well.
This one is even more Jack Sparrow centred. He takes the spotlight and we see just why Captain Jack is king of the sea. His compass, we believed it just took him to the Isla Des Muertes does so much more than that. It is so very impressive. Keira and Orlando back down a little in this one to the might of Johnny’s Jack. Him and his Pearl get the most screen time even if the main plot is still Elizabeth and Will Turner based. The villains in this one are a gruesome lot. They are composed of Davey Jones’ cursed crew who are forced to serve a lifetime on his Flying Dutchman.
Its hard to talk about this film without giving away the plot. The film does however begin with Elizabeth and Will on their wedding day which is disrupted by warrants for their arrests because they had a hand in the release of Jack Sparrow. Their capturer is Lord Cutler Beckett and he wants something from Sparrow and he sends Willow to retrieve it. Davey Jones meanwhile has a watch on Jack’s soul and time is up. He wants it and for Jack to join his crew. We also discover the most dangerous creature in all the waters of the world. The Kraken which can literally tear ships apart and is kind of the like pit of Sarlaac on water. In fact this is exactly what it looks like. The effects throughout the film are absolutely superb. Both the digital effects and also those created from the historical value of the piece. Everything looks very pretty and in its place even as all hell breaks loose around it.
This film is the perfect follow on from Black Pearl as it answers some of the questions which that film posed. However, it also creates many more questions than it answers to force us to want to wait until the release of the third film next year. If all questions are answered its going to be a very good film. Do not get me wrong I enjoyed this film an awful lot and will no doubt see it again and again as it will become a classic trilogy I have not doubt. I also recommend everyone see it as it will entertain you over its long 150min run time. So 150mins which has no closure whatsoever, its frustrating but good. See it or you will be missing out and will be greatly confused when the third arrives.
