7/7/2006 R.V (Runaway Vacation) (2006)
I wasn't sure what to expect from this film. I thought it would be one of the new weaker Robin Williams films. I suppose this is on a par with Jumanji which is one of my favourites by him. He hits the comedy family dad role on the head in this film I think. Being useless enough to make you laugh and clever enough to just about hold everything together. His co-stars also do a pretty dandy job. Theres the token cute daughter (who I quite liked but apparently is a singer called jojo, unfortunately she doesn't look like this). Anyway I was just doing my research for my review and found that, she must not be a very popular singer as she sings in this film very badly. There is the token family sings to different songs scene and she is not so great. Also there is a brilliant credits scene where the family sing and she ain't so hot in that either. Anyway enough digging at an actress who calls herself Jojo but is actually quite cute. This film doesn't really pull any surprises. It is pretty standard in the jokes it plays. Theres a lot you can do with a RV and the best thing this film does is remove bits from it as the film goes on. I feel a bit sorry for the RV used as it gets battered and destroyed throughout. The RV is the best actor in this film, the reliable protagonist always available to be the butt of the jokes.
This film is the usual family dumb comedy. Its more suitable than say Meet the Parents for the kids and they will enjoy it as dad struggles to get closer to his kids after cancelling their trip to Hawaii so he can go to a business meeting. Its pretty standard stuff and this film could never really go wrong. The son Carl is annoying however and you wonder what exactly he is doing there except to be the annoying kid who never stops lifting weights. He too has his moments but this film does and should revolve around the talents of Robin Williams. He makes the film work and could repair his career after a lot of smaller appearances caused by the flop that was Bicentennial Man. Go see this film, you will laugh at jokes you have seen many times before but it has heart and is good fun. A film for all the family then, yessir. It even tries to sell the idea of RVing to people with the jolly message at the end of the film. But in the end I recommend the film. But cannot endorse RV's!
