Hard Candy (2005)

I had heard a lot of hoohah earlier in the year when this film got released in America. It was hailed as being controversial and the best thriller of the year. I do not think that either of these is overstepping the mark after seeing this brilliant film. However the reviews of the film were not what inspired me to see it. My reason was far more human, I think the lead actress is beautiful. I watched X Men and couldn't keep my eyes off of her. She looks so young and yet was born on the exact day of my lovely girlfriend.
Anyway to the film Ellen Page the actress in question plays a psychotic 14yr old girl who is being hit on by Patrick Wilson who stood out in this role. In fact when I saw him tied up during the film I just thought. My word if ever they make a Metal Gear Solid film that guy is Solid Snake. He has that gruff attitude and plays his role perfectly.
This is the debut film by director David Slade and what a project to get the ball rolling. The film starts off innocently enough (although the opening credits are half a minute too long) introducing the two characters. The first third of the film in fact is introducing them to us. The second third is where things change and Wilsons character is tortured. 40mins is taken up with a procedure being threatened that will make men cross their legs. The final third if I am dealing in a three act structure sense is the resolution. We find out what the hells going on (although you have an idea throughout) and ends in the only way it really can. If you go and see this and you are male it will haunt you however people of both sexes should enjoy it. The lipsyncing is not perfect. The camerawork however is, it is eratic in a Tony Scott way and you actually see very little of the torture as the camera pans away to show time passing. This is good and brings into question why the film received an 18 certificate. I would presume it is because young men will not enjoy. Anyway I reccomend this film for the reasons of it being the best thriller of the year and also because Ellen Page is a cutey... Although you may like to go and see XMen3 for proof.
