26/5/2006 X Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Anyone who had any doubts about the new X Men film (and there have always been fanboys who have) should be dispelled immediately. This film is the best of the trilogy which is always useful for the last one in the bunch. The second film just seemed like a stepping stone to get to this one and it tells the story of the last days of conflict between man and mutant.
The film starts with a well shot flashback and from then on its action most of the way. The time for talking is over and all the actors play their parts nicely. The main premise is this; a new drug is being released that controls the mutant gene in the DNA and thus turns mutants back into people. This is met by some as a miracle and others as an outrage and the X Men have to sort through.
If you have seen the previous two films then it will be emotional for you and you will deeply enjoy it. Anyone who hasn't seen the previous two films, I think you can still enjoy it but I reccommend seeing the others first. I had my doubts about this film however they were unfounded and it is definately the best of the trilogy with strong visuals, sound and editing. The problem I had with it was nothing to do with the film at all and is completely unrelated. The cinema I was in was having a little trouble with the sound and it was thus slightly out of sync. We also got the experience a tad quieter and there was an electronic hiss at times. Not the films fault however that is really the only gripe I can find.
This is storytelling at its best as relative newbie Brett Ratner fills the shoes of Bryan Singer almost better than Bryan Singer fills those shoes. I cannot wait to see what Singer does with Superman (I think from the trailers it looks lame and pointless) and I do not think it will better this. Heck even Vinnie Jones works well as Juggernaut amid cries that it is awful casting from Sean and others. Go see this right now!
