I, like a lot of people in England read Empire Film Magazine. However, recently I have been noticing that their reviews are getting a bit farfetched. My friend Sean summed it up perfectly "They glorify indie films" this is another example. Empire gave this film four stars and it just isn't that good.
So what do we got here from this high school indie film? Well we have a noir film... with teenagers. It works quite nicely flowing here and there but there are places where the narrative is just a bit daft. There are places where it is so cheesy that you are not sure if you are meant to laugh or cry at how bad it is. For example the Vice Principal talks to him like he's a police man and its daft. The film fails at making you believe the characters, its like they don't know that they are 15. For me the first ten minutes are the bit that work the best. It sets up the story and who his character is. The first shot of the whole film is very powerful with our hero hunched over the body of his ex-girlfriend.
After these first ten minutes its this kid running around a town, penetrating drug lords. He's pretending to be 30+ with other kids pretending to be 30+ it just don't work for me.
Don't get me wrong it is a good film although you have to take a lot for granted, as a brit we don't understand a lot of the language used in the film. The cast does a good job of trying to make it believable with the main character played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt who has grown a lot since his third rock from the sun days (in fact I didn't recognise him until I looked on imdb) being a strong casting choice.
Ok so this is a debut director and for a debut film it is very good. However he also wrote the screenplay and there are some places where the screenplay stalls the whole film. Its like theres an in joke which no-one else gets when they are sitting on a beach and then there is a random conversation about Tolkien. This film can not for me break into the higher echelon of film ratings, so empire, why four stars? Review by Jonathan Little
