Mission Impossible 3 (2006)
|
JJ Abrams is hot property at the moment. After his hit TV show Lost which had me and thousands of others hooked from week one he was offered this film by Tom Cruise. After the poor effort that was Mission Impossible 2 directed by John Woo the trilogy needed kick starting again and what better way for Abrams to show his feature length muscles. The films style reminded me very much of an average episode of lost with twists and deceptions. Its weird even though it is 2hrs long and it seems like not a lot happens in the film there is rarely a moment wasted that is not integral to the close knit story.
I was shocked by the first sequence of the film and really did not expect it to happen like that and the film keeps up the pace throughout. To me it is a great shame that Phillip Seymour Hoffman had so few scenes, as a villain he is not in it nearly enough for my liking. He does a brilliant job though as Owen Davian who sells weapons and is a believable and strong villain. Tom Cruise does a typically Tom Cruise job and all the supporting actors were top brass. Michelle Monaghan who shone in my favourite film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang shines again here as Ethan Hunts girlfriend and the casting of Laurence Fishbourne is a good step. There are also a few moment of genius that only british viewers will really pick up. Simon Pegg the star of spaced and Shaun of the Dead has a few cameos in this film as a technician and he literally steals all of the scenes which he is in even if he is just hiding at the back of the shot. It is really good to see Simon there.
Being Mission Impossible the film takes place in its fair share of exotic location such as the Vatican and Singapore and you always get the feeling that wherever they go Hoffman’s bad guy is one step ahead of Cruise’s Hunt and this is a good thing to see. This film blows the other two Mission Impossible films out of the water and if the series continues I hope it does so in this vain. Look out especially for the scene on the bridge it is pure action filmmaking brilliance. Everyone who likes film should see this one, JJ Abrams is going to be a huge superstar name on everyones lips in the near future so keep an eye on his career he is on the up and has been compared to Hitchcock already. Thanks JJ for saving this film series!
