Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging (2008)
|
Which is worst? A) Finding your cat dressed up as a bride, complete with tiara and veil. B) Flashing your huge granny knickers at the boy you like. C) Being laughed out of a party because you showed up dressed as a stuffed olive?
Georgia Nicholson faces all three – and more – in Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging. As the teenage Bridget Jones navigates the angst-ridden and comedic world of becoming a woman, she’ll make plenty of mistakes to learn from.
A huge fan of the series of books by Louise Rennison, I went to see this film with high expectations, I didn’t find it as laugh-out-loud funny, but appreciated the stronger narrative. Basically, they had to cut strings of random jokes (like Libby’s naughty nursery rhymes and the escapades of Rosie and Sven) in favour of a continuous and resolvable plot line.
Newcomer Georgia Groome delivers a sincere and pretty performances as Georgia. The camera work is well done – from a shot of Georgia’s “huge” nose reflected in a spoon, to seascapes that make even Eastbourne look charming and romantic. And the film isn’t all teen drama and comic mishaps: it carries honest but subtle messages about betrayed friendships and the importance of family to its younger audience.
Overall, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging made me giggle, and it will put a smile on your face. Review by Elizabeth Little
