Hancock (2008)
|
Hancock is one of those films where you don't know when entering the cinema whether it is going to be good or bad. Super hero spoofs are a bit like that. With Superhero movie and Hancock in the same summer period I figured the Will Smith film would be the safer option.
Hancock is a down and out super hero who hasn't come to terms with being the only one of his kind on the planet this has led him to the bottle and makes him a loner. He causes fights and is hated by the criminals he puts away and the cops because of the huge damage he causes, tending to create more damage than the criminals do. He runs into PR man Jason Bateman who makes it his duty to improve Hancocks image leading to him accepting a stay in jail as punishment for his crimes. The problem is this part of the film only takes the first 40 minutes of screen time meaning that the whole plot is effectively finished at half distance. What we had till this stage was very good entertainment but the second half represents such a shift in direction for the film that it ruins it, for me at least. I am not going to comment on what happens as it is a major spoiler but while it wraps up the plot it does it in a manner which seems tacked on and confusing. While it is just about possible to make sense of this period in the film it turns it into a tacky film, indeed the kind of tat I tend to keep well away from. The performances are strong from the cast but this film suffers from its plot and confusing finale.
So in answer to the earlier conundrum the first half breaks the mould and is an engaging watch but the initial plot dries up too quickly leaving a rushed and confusing ending which could have been a completely different film. Will Smith has chosen another good film for himself to get the crowds moving and he is good in the role. Jason Bateman backs up his strong turn in Juno with another good performance here. You will enjoy Hancock but you may leave a little confused by what just happened. Review by Jonathan Little
