20/6/2008 The Incredible Hulk (2008)
After the success of Iron Man in May I was hoping for more of the same when it came to Marvel's second feature film. It once again boasted a brilliant cast that you would not expect to front an action film and by and large they do a good job again. William Hurt is a strong General Ross looking to hunt down Bruce Banner and learn his secrets so they can be recreated and controlled for a battlefield. Edward Norton as Banner is a recluse thanks to his having to hide away from the US government. We first see him hiding in a shanty town in South America laying low working in a bottling plant. Now I figure Iron Man is a good place to start when judging this film. Hulk does not have it easy Tony Stark (Iron Man) is Mr charisma thus making him very watchable on screen. Banner due to his years of hiding is the opposite. We find out very little about him as a character, thats not to say Norton does a bad job just that the character is kinda shallow.
The films set pieces also make little sense to me, would this general have permission to launch a major offensive on one man at an American college? I doubt it but then if I question that then the whole film unravels... The plot takes further turns into obscurity as the film goes on in the final fight with Abomination the Hulk is told to stop fighting by his love and then just runs away. What happens to abomination? he isn't dead yet and when he awakens the army won't be able to restrain him. Its things like this that make no sense and ruin the film. I apologise for ruining the ending but its such a blinding oversight it has to be mentioned. I will end by saying that Tony Stark steals the film with his cameo and that says a lot about this film. It could have been so much better but in the end the small plot errors pile up and overwhelm the film.
