The Water Horse (2007)
|
After his father’s ship is sunk by Germans, Angus feels drawn to the water but also profoundly afraid of it. On a trip to the beach he discovers an interesting egg, which hatches into a creature he’s never seen before. Not in any book about reptiles or dinosaurs, this creature is the stuff of legends: a water horse, a sea monster, the rarest animal in the world. When a regiment of soldiers moves in to his house, and the water horse starts growing abnormally, Angus conceals it in Loch Ness. The CGI monster is sleek and well done, growing larger and more muscle-y through out the film, even carrying Angus on its back through the eerie depths of the loch. The film subtly shows rather than tells, only helping out the viewer on a few points of Scottish folk lore. Based on the book by Dick King Smith, this is a charming tale of friendship and war, grief and wildness, and one boy coming to grips with manhood. Review by Elizabeth Little
