Juno (2007)
|
Juno and her stepmom get kicked out of the hospital for telling the ultrasound technician 16-year-old Juno – famous locally for druggedly jumping in the mall fountain screaming, “I am a Kraken from the deep!” – could be a better mother than the possible psychopaths who will adopt her baby.
This scene sums up the attitude of Juno towards pregnancy and life in high school. The film avoids all the moralizing, panic, and depression commonly surrounding teenage pregnancy. Instead it is whimsical, poignant and knee-slappingly funny. The soundtrack lends a lighthearted, amiable tone, and the overuse of slang makes the dialogue bouncy and the characters engaging.
At first glance a chick flick or teen movie, Juno proves deeper and more widely appealing. Not only does it tell the story of Juno’s relationship with the father of her baby, but with her own parents, and with the couple to whom she plans on giving the baby. It’s about walking through high school with “a fat suit I can’t take off,” finding people you can trust, and filling your boyfriend’s mailbox with a hundred packs of orange tick-tacks to tell him you love him.
