The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)
|
The Other Boleyn Girl, based on the novel by Philippa Gregory, tells the story of two halves of one soul: sisters. Anne and Mary Boleyn are as dissimilar as can be: Anne ambitious, selfish, and brunette, Mary gentle, virtuous, blonde and overlooked. When King Henry VII comes to call the Boleyn patriarchs throw both sisters in his path, seeking fortune and influence. But only one can captivate him, and only one will live to remember their love.
This is a beautiful-to-look-at film, with rich colours and textures: you can almost feel the crimson velvets, snowy ermine, and cool stone walls. The actors make excellent use of meaningful glances and poignant silences, building suspense and tension. The setting of key scenes fascinates; Henry declares his love to Anne while Mary gives birth to his son in the next room. Jane Rochester glimpses Anne going to bed with her brother and dashes off to report before she can see the whole picture.
The film’s main problem is that of any adaptation: they had to cut out so much of the book to fit the story into two hours. But with a 530 page book that spans 15 years, it’s understandable. The book’s subplots could only be hinted at, the politics and history were skimmed over, but the main point of the story remained strong: sisterhood is stronger than rivalry or romance.
