No Country for Old Men (2008)
|
This is a beautiful film that is framed and shot beautifully with some brilliant acting from its three leads and could well be the best film I will see this year. That is of course if you ignore the final twenty minutes of the film. According to several places that I have checked it is very faithful to the book which makes me think the ending of the book must be terrible as well. It is hard to describe the problem without giving away the ending so I will just say this would be a 90+ rated film if not for the final twenty minutes. In saying that I am not even saying that the scenes that end the film are bad, they are still brilliantly directed and shot with brilliant acting it just fails to wrap up the narrative. The film is left hanging in a way I have only ever experienced in poor art films. The film is slow and contemplative all the way through but it always feels like you are on a journey but come the end of the film this journey just grinds to a halt and you are left wondering what the hell happened. It is a shame that an amazing film fails in its final fifth this badly but unfortunately it is the case. If you want to watch a relatively violent film that will leave you satisfied then this is not it. It is still a very good film and the ending I guess adds realism when you listen to Tommy Lee's dialogue at the start in relation to his speech at the end but to put these pieces together is far too tiresome for this film. Amazing but flawed. Review by Jonathan Little
