Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2008)
|
I have enjoyed every film I have seen Phillip Seymour Hoffman in and this film is no exception. This is the story of two brothers in need of some extra cash and so they decide to rob their parents jewelry store. The build up to the robbery and its aftermath are covered from the perspectives of three different characters: Andy (Hoffman), Hank (Ethan Hawke) and their father (Albert Finney). These three actors put in brilliant performances that real help to build the story. The biggest problem with this film, however, is it is perhaps too real in that a lot of the dialogue especially early on is mumbled and thus lost. The directing of Sidney Lumet, however, is brilliant and the film in general is very strong and believable. The ending is a little weak and unlikely but it kinda works and the two brothers in particular make it work I just think that the final plot point could perhaps have been built on more as the film was developing. The editing takes a while to get used to but the way the three story strands build up your knowledge as it goes is very powerful and interesting. I highly recommend this film although it does have some small problems. Review by Jonathan Little
