I Am Legend (2007)

From the moment I saw the first trailer for this film I knew it could be brilliant. The second trailer where the dark humans were first shown made it seem a little worse but having now seen the film I can happily say it is indeed very very good.
Will Smith plays Robert Neville who truly thinks he is the last man alive after a virus wipes out 90% of the human race, 12 million are immune to the infection whilst the remaining 590 million are 'dark seekers' who prey on the living. Neville has dedicated his life to finding a cure while being forced to live in a deserted New York city with just his dog Sam and mannequins for company.
The film is very well directed and thanks to some amazing acting by Will Smith is tense in all the right places, you truly get a sense of what New York would be like if it was left empty and you feel everything that happens to Neville. Where the film does trip up as other reviewers have also noted is in the night sequences, the infected humans do not seem overly realistic and they detract from the film somewhat. This does not hurt what is in effect a brilliant story with a great performance from the always amazing Will Smith. Francis Lawrence who also directed the film Constantine (another film with poor CG effects but a decent story) is outstanding at the helm of this film in making an empty New York believable and the rest of the cast (including dog) are superb. Go and see but be prepared for a few jumps both in quality and from your seat.
