The lives of Others (2006)
|
The lives of others tells the story of the German spies in East Germany in the 1980's. Specifically it focuses on the character of Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler as he spies on the apparently loyal writer Georg Dreyman. I can't much talk about the actors' previous work as I have not seen it, indeed the only German film I have seen and enjoyed was Downfall. The acting from all of the talent involved, however, is very strong and portrays the period and themes of the film perfectly. Your emotions change constantly as you try to discover which side is in the right and should receive your support indeed it swings a lot throughout the film.
The film is pretty well put together as well although there are a couple of bad edits with people jumping about a room but it is generally quite tight. I really enjoyed this film and the realistic sense of oppression it portrayed with everyone in fear of being implicated for an idle remark in the street and with many people's homes being bugged. In the end though this is a story of a story of human kindness even through a repressive regime. Would I reccomend it? Yes I really would it is a very strong film that thoroughly deserved the oscar that came its way this year. Review by Jonathan Little
