24/11/2007 Lions for Lambs (2007)
Robert Redford directs this political film about America's war on terror which is in fact the second such film I have seen in a month. This film was destined for greatness with a great director several top acting talents in the form of Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep and Michael Pena. The acting talent seem a little let down, however, by the narrative itself. The film only has four scenes in its whole 90 minute running length and one of these seems a little flabby. While I see the purpose of Redford's professor trying to convince a lagging student of the worth of picking up his game it could happily have been taken from the film. Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep make the best of the source material as a senator and journalist combo working their way through a new strategy for the war in the Middle East and Michael Pena does a good job as a soldier even if his role is a little empty and partly pointless. The only standout story comes from the Cruise, Streep partnership while the rest is there as a backup. The whole film is building to an emotional climax which can be seen coming from several miles away and thus is lacking the punch it desires with predictable dialogue leading up to it.
Overall this film is well acted and a decent commentary on America's foreign policy and while Streep and Cruise duke it out the rest of the film feels a little hollow. My final comment is a film making comment while the shots were all nice and the style was enjoyable all of the actors' teeth seemed over white. It looked fake and they stood out with the kind of over exposed style on display. This film turned out to be more average than I had hoped and would make a rather nice stage play... or dvd, so wait till then.
